The sunset was pretty nice, but it was quick - there were clouds up until about 10 minutes before, and it died out pretty quickly. Always tricky though, but I kind of like sunset shots that are on the dark side. There's something nice about being able to see more of the saddle.
I was trying to get the sun to catch some nice highlights on the saddle horn and stuff. A little heavy, but I kind of like the lens flares. I set the saddle and the blanket up on our adobe wall. It had rained earlier - the wall wasn't wet, but when the stucco gets rained on it looks like that for a little while. Same photo, a little less heavy-handed with the vignette in the corners, and I disabled the sharpening I had going in the last version so it's slightly softer and subtler. I like the cropping better at least...
I tried this one a couple of ways, this is the black and white version. I like the way you notice details on the saddle when the color's not a factor You can still see some details here, and I took a lot of color out of the photo to give it kind of a vintage look, but it also just matches the late sunset since you can't see color as easily after the sun has gone down.

Description: This is my second night trying to get an interesting shot of this saddle that our friend Krista was kind enough to loan to me. Between the weather cooperating and me having a better idea what I want, I feel like I'm getting somewhere. In case you noticed, I keep shooting the saddle from the same side because the other side was damaged at one point in its life, so some of the leather isn't embossed and has a different color. I might try it anyway, but since I really only need one good shot, I'm not being particularly forceful about making sure I capture both sides. (If you missed the back story, I'm trying to prepare a photo or two to donate to a nonprofit for an auction at the end of the month, there's a horse theme and I don't have anything ideal.)
