Description: Almost 3 weeks ago, our Painted Lady caterpillars arrived at Chez Muller. (Cheez?) They ate, grew, and formed chrysalids. The first one hatched 2 days ago; we kept it overnight and after it had eaten and looked strong, we released it. 2 more hatched today, and we have 2 to go for a total of 5. Each chrysalis has little golden metallic nodes on it, and shortly after each butterfly is born, they release an alarming red fluid, meconium, it contains the remnant colors and fluids of their transformation, but the FAQs assure us it's not blood. (It would be both unsurprising and appropriate if it were.) Hard to photograph the little buggers in their mesh cage, but they're great, everyone in the house finds them inspiring. BREAKING NEWS: As of this morning, the rest of them hatched. Three of them were pretty sugared up and ready to go, so we took them out and set them free. Now there's just one left, it was the smallest and we're letting it get a little strength before we set it loose into the dustbowl we live in.
