When I test a new lens I just shoot whatever's at arms' length. You can tell it's at the F2.8 side because just the middle puzzle pieces are sharp. It came with a macro tube, with it attached I can focus at 6" or less. I haven't played with it enough to know if this softness is me, my camera's image stabilization, or the lens itself. If it's a little less than sharp, maybe I can use it for portraits but it's kind of early to call it soft... Another macro tube shot... The texture on the middle row is pretty clear at least in the center, so it might be shaky hands that make the soft shots. No surprise there...
This is the lens on the camera; you can tell it's older and you can tell it's Russian. (The Russian characters spell "Industar," the brand name.) If it weren't for the adapter which is about 1/2" thick itself, it would be a real pancake lens. The aperture ring is actually on the front of the lens (notice the red dot). It'll focus to infinity - an initial concern whenever you adapt a lens to a camera it wasn't built for - but not as it's marked on the lens. The dogs like the smaller camera a little better, and I think the fact I don't cover my face with it (since there's no optical viewfinder on the camera) helps too. Molly's usually pretty sketchy about cameras, but this smaller Olympus allows me to sneak up quite a bit closer sometimes. She's not nearly as sketchy about it as she is with my big black Canon.

Description: Just got my first used Russian lens, it's an M39 mount 35 F2.8 and easily adaptable to my M4/3 Olympus. It came with a macro tube, so now I have macro capabilities on the Olympus. It's all manual, so focusing without a viewfinder can be challenging, but given enough light I'm pretty happy so far. I'm not sure how much character it adds yet, but it's fun to work with.
