Just north of Chimayo. I didn't stop for any of the weird little bursts of cottonwood that popped up in the middle of the scrub sometimes, hopefully next time. I feel a little like Glenn Ford when I take these excursions. (Like 3:10 to Yuma Glenn Ford, not "Christopher Reeve's Father in Superman" Glenn Ford.) A couple miles into the High Road, not far from Chimayo. It went from high desert to little streams and farmland just around a corner. A huge chunk of the drive was "normal" New Mexico beauty, but there were little shocks of color when we got near water, streams and such. Thank you, circular polarizer, for the amazing color capture.
Just so you don't think the entire drive was, like, foresty and stuff.
Truchas Peaks with some chamisa in front. Truchas Peaks again. I'd love to photograph the town a little next time I'm up. (You can see some of the buildings there on the left side of the photo.) Jack-a-dobe.
I didn't zoom in enough to show the busted old cars. This was pretty close to where they filmed "The Milagro Beanfield War." I let strangers hold my camera for a minute. Watson wasn't totally into the road trip.
A little bridge near Embudo. There was a ground squirrel running back and forth on it, and I don't think it was from joy. There were a lot of people out rafting, I had to work a little to get a people-free shot. (The water must still be reasonably warm, and it didn't seem crazy fast.)

Description: I've wanted to make this drive for a while and it was amazing. The pictures are not very impressive compared to what I saw, it was beautiful and maybe the best fall colors weekend. (On review, some of them weren't bad.) I'd love to make this drive every weekend this fall. For every photo I even attempted, there were 50 amazing places or things I missed. Highly recommended for my non-New Mexico friends.
