Some of the caves are sleeping-height only, and some of them can be stood in and remain pretty cool even when they're behind direct sun. They're often blackened from smoke from firepits and there are also paintings or just plainly painted walls inside. You can see the Tiny Gangster(tm) and her friend spelunking around inside.
Lots of these kiva ladders in the park, and whenever they go into an old dwelling, it's OK to climb inside. In this area there are lots of porous, big rocks; once you've been to Bandelier you can tell the difference between manmade or man-altered holes a little more easily, but you also look twice at any hills with Swiss cheese holes in them... The rows of holes were apparently for roofing and/or awnings. In this part of the park there are a lot of petroglyphs as well.
There are fires in this area a lot of summers, both from the violent lightening that the Jemez mountains seem to attract and from controlled USFS burns. (Which may or may not remain controlled.) There are plenty of tall, old trees, but some of them have charred bark near the bottom.

Description: Took an unplanned trip to Bendelier again with a couple friends last weekend, it was a great day. I love visiting there, and I plan to explore more of the park this spring. (I usually just hit the tourist loop in Frijoles Canyon and head home, but now that Sydney's older we can try some other stuff like Tsankawi Ruins.) There are Anasazi ruins, cave dwellings, ceremonial kivas, ladders, hoodoos, white rock, red rock, and even "running water." It was just a tad early for any greenery and we didn't even see any of the cool little Abert's squirrels this time, but it's a special place. http://www.nps.gov/band/index.htm
